Medical Travel Insurance may combine two different forms of protection:
- Treatment Complication Coverage, which may contribute towards the cost of treating certain medically recognised complications arising from the insured procedure.
- Travel Medical Coverage, which may support certain unexpected illnesses, accidents, emergency medical treatment or medically necessary transportation during the insured travel period.
These benefits are related but separate. A complication connected to the insured surgery is assessed under the complication section of the policy, while an unexpected illness or accident during travel may be assessed under the travel insurance section.
The exact protection available depends on the insurer, selected plan, procedure, policy duration, geographical scope and individual eligibility.
Important: Your insurance certificate and policy documents are always the final reference. Coverage limits, exclusions, deductibles, approval requirements and claim procedures may vary between policies.
Why Medical Travel Insurance Matters
Even when treatment is carefully planned and performed by an experienced medical team, no medical or surgical procedure is completely free from risk.
A medically recognised complication may require additional examinations, medication, further treatment or a corrective procedure. In some cases, the patient may also need to remain in Türkiye longer than expected or return for further treatment.
Medical Travel Insurance adds a financial and administrative layer of protection around the treatment journey. It does not remove medical risk, replace informed consent or guarantee that every additional expense will be covered. Its purpose is to provide support for specific eligible situations defined in the issued policy.
The travel section may also provide protection against certain unexpected events unrelated to the planned procedure, such as sudden illness, injury, emergency treatment or medical transportation during the insured journey.
For example, some Medical Travel Insurance plans may include separate limits for:
- Treatment complications
- Emergency medical treatment during travel
- Emergency medical transfer
- Return travel for complication treatment
- Additional accommodation
- Baggage or travel document loss
- Third-party liability
- Limited legal assistance
One insurance proposal reviewed by Healing Journey included €30,000 for illness-related medical treatment and €30,000 for emergency medical transfer, in addition to separate complication coverage. The available benefits and limits nevertheless vary according to the policy issued for each patient.
What Medical Travel Insurance May Cover
Treatment Complication Coverage
Treatment Complication Coverage is designed for certain medically recognised complications that arise after the insured surgery, intervention or medical procedure.
Depending on the policy, eligible expenses may include:
- Diagnostic tests required to assess the complication
- Medication directly related to the complication
- Medical treatment
- Hospital care
- A medically necessary corrective procedure
- Revision surgery, where specifically covered
Coverage applies only to the procedure or treatment identified in the individual policy.
A complication is not the same as dissatisfaction with the cosmetic, functional or personal result of treatment. Insurance generally distinguishes between:
- A medically recognised complication
- A request for an optional or elective change
- Personal dissatisfaction or unmet expectations
- A condition unrelated to the insured treatment
- Malpractice, where excluded by the policy
The insurance company assesses the medical records and policy conditions before deciding whether a claim is eligible.
Some policies also specify that only complications listed within the patient’s informed consent documentation or recognised within accepted medical literature are eligible. The exact definitions must therefore be reviewed in the issued policy.
Travel Medical Coverage
Medical Travel Insurance may also include a separate travel insurance section.
This part may provide support if the insured patient develops an unexpected illness, accident or injury during the covered travel period.
Depending on the plan, this may include:
- Emergency medical examination
- Emergency hospital treatment
- Surgery required because of an unexpected illness or injury
- Prescribed emergency medication
- Ambulance transportation
- Transfer to an appropriate medical facility
- Medical evacuation, where authorised and medically necessary
- Transfer of remains in the event of death
This travel protection is different from complication coverage.
For example:
- An infection directly connected to the insured surgery may be assessed as a treatment complication.
- A sudden unrelated illness or accidental injury occurring during travel may be assessed under the travel medical section.
Both remain subject to the policy limits, exclusions, effective dates and approval procedures.
Return Travel for Complication Treatment
Some policies may cover part of the cost of returning to Türkiye when a patient needs treatment for an eligible complication after returning home.
This benefit may include an economy-class flight, subject to:
- A maximum coverage amount
- A deductible
- Medical justification
- Prior insurer approval
- Travel dates and destination requirements
One reviewed policy included return transportation coverage of up to €1,000, subject to a deductible. Other plans may provide different limits.
Return travel should not be arranged independently unless urgent circumstances make this unavoidable. Patients should contact Healing Journey and follow the insurer’s instructions before making non-emergency bookings.
Additional Accommodation
When a complication requires the patient to remain in Türkiye longer than originally planned, some policies may contribute towards additional accommodation outside the hospital.
This benefit may be subject to:
- A daily accommodation limit
- A maximum number of covered days
- A deductible or waiting period
- A medical report
- Prior insurance approval
- Confirmation that the stay is directly connected to eligible complication treatment
Voluntary hotel extensions, tourism-related stays or accommodation unrelated to a covered medical issue are generally not included.
Treatment in the Patient’s Home Country
Certain policies may provide limited coverage for early complication treatment in the patient’s home country when returning to Türkiye is not medically necessary.
Examples may include:
- Wound discharge
- Early infection
- Minor wound management
However, this is not automatically included in every policy. It may also be subject to a low sub-limit and specific documentation requirements.
One reviewed policy included limited home-country intervention coverage of up to €1,500 for eligible early complications that did not require return travel.
Additional Travel Benefits
Depending on the selected plan, Medical Travel Insurance may also include:
- Lost baggage protection
- Renewal of lost travel documents
- Third-party financial liability
- Limited legal consultancy
- Medical advice services
- Funeral or repatriation assistance
These benefits should not be assumed to apply unless they are clearly listed in the individual insurance certificate or policy wording.
Coverage Limits Are Selected According to the Treatment
Not every patient requires the same level of complication coverage.
The appropriate plan may depend on:
- The type of surgery or intervention
- The complexity of the procedure
- The likely cost of treating a complication
- The hospital and specialist involved
- The expected recovery period
- The patient’s age and eligibility
- The insurer’s available plans
For example, some plans may provide complication limits of €1,000, €3,000 or €5,000, while other procedures may require a different level of protection.
Healing Journey reviews the planned treatment and coordinates an available policy that is appropriate for the procedure and expected level of risk.
The final protection is always determined by the issued policy, not by a general website description.
Where Must Treatment Be Performed?
The original procedure must be performed at a healthcare institution that meets the requirements stated in the policy.
In practice, this commonly means an institution authorised or accredited to provide international health tourism services in Türkiye.
Depending on the insurer and policy, eligible complication treatment may also need to take place:
- Within Türkiye
- At an insurer-approved healthcare institution
- At the same healthcare institution where the original treatment was performed
- Under the supervision of the original treating team
One reviewed policy specifically states that corrective treatment for a complication must take place at the institution where the original treatment was performed.
This is why patients should not arrange non-emergency treatment independently at another clinic without first checking the policy conditions.
In a genuine emergency, urgent medical care should always be sought first.
How Healing Journey Supports You
Medical Travel Insurance involves several parties, each with a different responsibility.
The Doctor and Hospital
The treating doctor and hospital are responsible for:
- Assessing the patient’s medical condition
- Diagnosing any complication
- Recommending appropriate treatment
- Providing medical reports
- Delivering the required care
The Insurance Company
The insurance company is responsible for:
- Reviewing the policy terms
- Assessing the medical and administrative documents
- Determining whether the event is covered
- Approving or rejecting the claim
- Calculating the eligible payment
Healing Journey
Healing Journey coordinates the process around the patient.
Our role may include:
- Arranging the Medical Travel Insurance policy
- Confirming the insured procedure and policy dates
- Providing the patient’s insurance documents
- Facilitating communication with the treating doctor and hospital
- Informing the insurance company when necessary
- Helping collect medical and administrative documentation
- Following requests for additional information
- Supporting communication during the review and approval process
- Assisting with clarification or reconsideration where appropriate
- Helping coordinate approved complication treatment, accommodation or return travel
The insurance is issued in the patient’s name, and the insurer remains responsible for all coverage decisions.
Healing Journey does not diagnose the complication, provide the insurance benefit or guarantee that a claim will be approved. We make the process easier for the patient by coordinating the communication between the medical team, hospital and insurance company.
How the Process Works
1. We Review the Planned Treatment
Before travel, we review the proposed procedure, treatment date, hospital and expected recovery period.
2. We Coordinate the Insurance Plan
We identify an available Medical Travel Insurance plan based on the procedure, travel dates and required level of coverage.
3. The Policy Is Issued
Once approved and paid, the policy is issued for the patient.
The documents should show:
- The insured patient
- The insured procedure
- Policy start and end dates
- Territorial scope
- Complication coverage limit
- Travel medical benefits
- Deductibles
- Exclusions
- Claim requirements
4. The Patient Receives the Documents
Healing Journey provides the certificate and policy documents before treatment so the patient can review them.
5. We Remain Available During the Journey
If a concern arises, the patient should contact the medical team and Healing Journey as soon as possible.
6. We Help Coordinate the Claim
Where appropriate, we assist with collecting and submitting the documents requested by the insurer and continue communication throughout the review process.
If Something Does Not Feel Right
Early communication is important.
A medical concern should not be ignored while waiting to see whether it improves.
Seek Medical Advice
Contact the treating doctor or hospital promptly and explain:
- When the symptoms began
- What symptoms are present
- Whether they are getting worse
- Whether fever, bleeding, discharge, pain or swelling is present
- Whether another doctor has already assessed the problem
Contact Healing Journey
Inform our team so we can coordinate communication with the treating hospital and insurer.
Follow Emergency Guidance
In an emergency, seek urgent medical care immediately. Insurance notification can follow once the patient is medically stable.
Do Not Arrange Non-Emergency Treatment Without Checking
Where possible, do not arrange private corrective treatment, return travel or hospital admission without first checking the policy requirements.
Unauthorised treatment may not be reimbursed.
Documents That May Be Required
The insurer may request:
- Insurance certificate and policy

- Passport entry and exit records

- Corrective treatment report
- Hospital invoice
- Medication receipts
- Accommodation invoices

Requirements vary according to the policy and nature of the claim.
One reviewed insurer specifically requests the original procedure report, informed consent form, patient statement, complication treatment report, invoices and passport records when assessing a claim.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every patient receive the same Medical Travel Insurance?
No. Coverage differs according to the insurer, selected plan, procedure, policy period, patient eligibility and individual risk.
Does Medical Travel Insurance cover every complication?
No. The complication must meet the definition and conditions stated in the policy.
Does it cover dissatisfaction with the result?
Usually not. Personal dissatisfaction or a request for an elective change is not normally considered a medical complication.
Does it cover unrelated illness during the trip?
It may, if the policy includes separate travel medical coverage. The travel section may cover certain sudden illnesses, accidents or emergencies during the insured journey.
Can complication treatment be performed in my home country?
Only where the policy allows it. Some policies provide limited home-country coverage, while others require treatment in Türkiye.
Can I choose any hospital for complication treatment?
Not always. Some policies require treatment at an approved institution or at the hospital where the original procedure was performed.
Who makes the final claim decision?
The insurance company.
What does Healing Journey do?
Healing Journey coordinates communication, documentation and the practical process between the patient, hospital, doctor and insurer.
